-
4-week extended stay Board and Train program. Your puppy will be brought home at 12 weeks of age.
-
Puppy will be "proofed" with several more basic obedience commands. These could include stay, leave it, come (recall), and place (go to bed).
-
Puppy will continue crate training. We hope for your puppy to be sleeping through the night in his crate when you bring him home. We hope for your puppy to learn to enter his crate on command, and will stay in his crate (even with the door open) until released.
-
Puppy will continue leash training. We hope that your puppy will be able to master loose leash walking during their extended stay. We will make sure that your puppy is comfortable and used to being on a leash so that you can continue "tether training" at home. (keeping puppy on a leash inside the house until potty trained)
-
Puppy will receive extra socialization with our "big dog" pack. Your puppy will be a little bit older during this extended stay, and will be able to spend daily supervised time with our adult dogs that live on site. This is great socialization for young pups--learning to be around other dogs while in a safe and clean environment (remember, they're not fully vaccinated yet!).
-
Puppy will receive car-ride conditioning. Motion sickness or car-ride anxiety is very common in these submissive, large-breed puppies. If we identify early on that your puppy has motion sickness, we will start them on our car-ride conditioning program right away, taking them on daily car rides.
-
Puppy will go on two local field trips. We understand the extreme importance of early socialization and exposure in order to produce a well-rounded puppy. While here for our 4-week extended stay, your puppy will receive a third round of vaccines at 10 weeks. After that milestone, we will be able to take your puppy on two highly controlled, safe and positive local field trips. Your puppy will learn to be comfortable in a public social setting. We do not allow your puppy to come into contact with other animals and we do not allow strangers to pet or interact with your puppy.
-
Puppy will receive age-appropriate vaccinations and de-worming at no additional cost to you.
-
Puppy will receive a Full Groom package prior to pick-up. This is a great experience for your puppy!
-
Puppy may receive an AKC Virtual Home Manners Title! All costs associated with receiving this title are included, including application fees and registration fees.
We do not make any guarantees regarding the training or level of education that your puppy will receive while here for an extended stay. We always have goal, such as those listed above, but each and every puppy learns differently. Please understand that the items listed above are goals, NOT guarantees.
Training Shopping List
Our Training Shopping List is a supplemental list to our New Puppy Shopping List. Please understand that the items on our Training Shopping List are items that we recommend purchasing in addition to all of the items on our New Puppy Shopping List.

Monks of New Skete
Grab a good book
We follow the Monks of New Skete's training protocol and philosophies very closely. We recommend reading all of their books!
We follow more traditional methods of dog training. The Monks of New Skete present very fair and effective ways to train your puppy and dog.
We recommend starting with "The Art of Raising a Puppy."
Long Line
For outdoor adventures
We recommend using a long line outside so that your puppy can roam and explore while ensuring that you are able to bring him back if you call him.
Recall training should be taken very seriously. We understand that it's fun to let your puppy roam and explore, but please keep them secured on a long line or leash at all times. If you call your puppy and he ignores you, the long line gives you the ability to reinforce your recall. If your puppy is not secured to a long line or leash and is allowed to ignore your recall, a game of chase will ensue and you have now taught your puppy that it is ok to NOT come when called.
Training Treats
Use these sparingly
We like to measure out our puppy's meals for the day, and then pull some kibble from those meals to use for training throughout the day.
Please be careful with using a lot of junky, commercially made training treats. Training a puppy requires giving a lot of treats. Any treats that you give your puppy should be considered a part of their daily diet and meal allotment. So treats need to be healthy and wholesome!
We like to use freeze dried treats, cut into tiny pieces. We also like to use air dried dog food pieces.
Starmark Collar
Do not use without educating yourself
Using a training collar comes with great responsibility. We recommend using a training collar when your puppy is between 5-6 months of age. Starmark collars are used to refine your dog's behavior on a leash, and they are a pre-requisite to using an electronic training collar.
Please read "The Art of Training Your Dog" by the Monks of New Skete BEFORE USING A STARMARK COLLAR.
Electronic Training Collar (e-collar)
Quality and education is crucial
E-collars should not be used on puppies younger than 5 months of age. E-collars are used to refine obedience commands and are used for advanced off-leash training. E-collars are used after your puppy has already been given a solid education in obedience training.
Do not purchase cheap alternatives. Low quality e-collars are not humane.
Please read "The Art of Training Your Dog" by the Monks of New Skete BEFORE USING A STARMARK COLLAR.
